Cyber Essentials is a UK Government scheme, run by The National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), and outlines the Government’s minimum baseline standards for cyber security.
Cyber Essentials Certification demonstrates that a Company is protecting itself by implementing the most important cyber security controls.
Cyber Essentials certification includes automatic cyber liability insurance for any UK company who certifies their whole organisation and has less than £20m annual turnover.
There are 2 levels of Cyber Essentials as noted below.
Cyber Essentials Verified Self-Assessment

The Verified Self-Assessment is based on a questionnaire. Companies answer a series of questions that address the scope of the assessment, their employees, devices and work locations.
The questionnaire also covers the 5 core controls, which include user access control, secure configuration, security update management, fire walls and routers and malware protection.
The answers must be signed-off by a board member or equivalent, at which point the answers can be marked by an assessor.
Cyber Essentials Plus

The Cyber Essentials Verified Self-Assessment is a prerequisite to Cyber Essentials Plus, and must be within 3 months of each other.
Although based on the same 5 core controls, Cyber Essentials Plus includes a technical audit of your IT systems to verify that the controls are in place. This technical audit gives more assurance that you are complying with the scheme.
The audit will cover a representative sample of user devices, all internet gateways, and all servers with services accessible to the internet.
